Cache Valley Sports: A Day of Big Wins, Close Calls, and Unforgettable Moments!

Alright, sports fans, let's cut to the chase.

You think the off-season is boring? Think again.

Monday wasn't just another manic Monday; it was a launchpad for local high school sports teams, and guess what?

They came out swinging, spiking, and scoring!

We're talking Green Canyon's softball squad demolishing Kearns 14-2, Logan's boys volleyball team upsetting the reigning champs from Grantsville, and Sky View's soccer team schooling Box Elder with a 4-1 victory.

That's a clean sweep of awesome, folks.

Everyone focuses on the wins, right? Highlight reels, victory dances, the whole shebang. But what about the nail-biters?

Logan's baseball team lost by a single run, and both Green Canyon and Logan's lacrosse teams suffered narrow defeats.

See, sports aren't just about the W; it's about the grit, the grind, and the "almost."

It's about Kyler Briel's monster performance for Logan baseball, even in a loss.

It's about Hayden Reeder's assist for Green Canyon lacrosse.

These aren't just footnotes; they're the real story.

From New York Philharmonic to a Barn in Hooper: The Extraordinary Journey of St. John's New Organ

Ever heard of an organ that's been a rockstar in both the New York Philharmonic and a barn?

Yeah, you read that right. St. Johns First Episcopal Church in Logan, Utah, just scored a piece of musical history that's wilder than your average church organ story.

So, picture this: It's 1962, Leonard Bernstein is conducting the New York Philharmonic, and the sound you're hearing is partly thanks to an Aeolian-Skinner Organ console.

Fast forward a few decades, and this same console is chilling in a barn in Hooper, Utah, surrounded by cows and chickens.

How does that even happen?

This isn't just any organ; it's a veteran of the New York Philharmonic Hall, played from 1962 to 1976.

After its stint in the Big Apple, it even spent some time at Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral in California.

But the real plot twist? It ended up in the hands of Hal Stoddard, a dairyman with a lifelong dream of owning a pipe organ.

He housed it in his "Hoopernacle Organ," a barn-turned-concert-venue where he played for folks for 25 years.

Enter Jonathan Rose, the music director and organist for St. Johns, who also happens to work for Anderson Organ Works.

Rose maintained Stoddard's Hoopernacle organ and struck up a friendship.

When Stoddard passed away in January 2024, his wife Joyce called Rose with an offer he couldn't refuse: take the console, or it's headed to the dump.

Most people think church organs are relics of the past, but actually, this one's got more stories than your grandpa's vinyl collection.

Rose rescued the console and, with Father Jason Samuel's blessing, hauled it to St. Johns.

Ten months later, after a jigsaw puzzle of wires and a fresh coat of Steinway black paint, the Aeolian-Skinner was back in action.

“Jonathan started unpacking the organ pieces and straw and hay was all over the place,” Father Samuel recalled. “It was like wiring a house. He had wires everywhere, but it is a beautiful organ now.”

And get this: it's got real ebony and ivory keys, a rarity these days.

Rose even had to rig up an electrical panel to make it sing without the original bellows or pipes.

The result?

A four-keyboard masterpiece that's a standout piece in the sanctuary.
